So, What Exactly is Honda Sensing®?

As mentioned in the introduction, Honda Sensing® is a comprehensive, technologically-advanced safety system that is composed of four main features:

  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Road Departure Mitigation
  • Collision Mitigation Braking System

With safety being such a tremendous priority for each Honda model, Honda Sensing® was created to provide unparalleled protection for the driver, and each passenger in the car.

The majority of features involved in Honda Sensing® act automatically, so you can focus on the road ahead, while your Honda worries about keeping you safe.

Next, we’ll look at each individual aspect of Honda Sensing®, so you can get a better understanding of this system’s overall value.

Lane Keeping Assist System

2018 Honda CR-V tech

The first system of note is the Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS). The purpose of LKAS is to keep your vehicle centered in your respective lane.

So, for example, if you’re driving along a particularly winding road, and begin to drift to the right, LKAS will pick up on this. If you continue drifting, and find any aspect of your vehicle outside of your respective lane, LKAS will automatically guide your steering wheel back toward the center of the lane, assuming you don’t correct the situation yourself.

This is a delicate and highly-advanced system designed to keep you on the straight and narrow.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Next up is the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) feature in the Honda Sensing® Suite. With this system in place, you’ll be able to set a particular distance behind the vehicle in front of you.

So, let’s say you’re on the highway, and you want to travel a couple car lengths behind the vehicle in front of you. After setting this preference in your Honda, the ACC will monitor your pace, so you speed up, or slow down, depending on the distance you set from the vehicle in front of you.

Road Departure Mitigation System

The Road Departure Mitigation System, or RDM, will actively adjust your steering and braking in the event you begin to shift lanes without signaling first.

This is designed to prevent you from straying out of your lane accidentally. If another vehicle is detected in the lane you’re drifting toward, your Honda will either brake subtly to avoid a collision, steer your vehicle back into its proper lane, or both, depending on necessity.

Collision Mitigation Braking System

The Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) comes into play if a front-facing collision seems imminent.

If this scenario occurs, CMBS will automatically apply the brakes in an effort to slow your vehicle down. This extra stopping power goes a long way in situations where every split-second matters.
