So, which one of these trusted midsize SUVs is right for you? Pat Peck Honda hopes to help you decide with this 2018 Honda CR-V vs. Subaru Forester comparison.
2018 Honda CR-V vs Subaru Forester: Performance
The 2018 Honda CR-V is powered by a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine that’s designed to maximize its production with Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (i-VTEC). This lets it get up to 184 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque.
The transmission working with this smart engine is a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with Sport Mode.
Together, the CVT and i-VTEC technologies make the 2018 Honda CR-V a fuel-efficient SUV by getting up to an EPA-estimated 28 MPG city and 34 MPG highwayi.
The 2018 Subaru Forester has a similar engine, but it isn’t capable of the same kind of power. It runs on a 2.5L 4-cylinder SUBARU BOXER® engine that gets up to 170 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque.
The standard transmission is a 6-speed manual, but you can upgrade to a CVT. It isn’t able to get the same fuel economy either with an EPA-estimated 26 MPG city and 32 MPG highway.
2018 Honda CR-V vs Subaru Forester: Cargo Room
Both the 2018 Honda CR-V and the 2018 Subaru Forester are capable of towing up to 1,500 pounds. What separates them is how much cargo room they have on the inside.
The Honda CR-V has a trunk with 39.2 cubic feet of space while the second-row seats are upright. If you need more space, you can nearly double that with the Easy Fold-Down 60/40 Split Rear Seatback. With the second row folded down it has a cargo volume of 75.8 cubic feet.
Loading your cargo when you’ve got your hands full is easier, too. With the Hands-Free Access Power Tailgate there’s no more digging for your keys. Just wave your foot in front of the sensor and start packing up.
The 2018 Subaru Forester also has lots of cargo room, but it falls a little short. With the back seats upright, there’s 34.4 cubic feet of space in the trunk. After they’ve been folded down the total cargo room comes to 74.7 cubic feet.
There’s a tradeoff with its cargo area though. It also has an available power rear gate, but it’s not available on the base trim. For every trim level above the base trim, the cargo area shrinks down to 31.5 cubic feet with the seats up and only 68.5 cubic feet with the seats down.
2018 Honda CR-V vs Subaru Forester: Infotainment
On the dashboard of the 2018 Honda CR-V, there’s a 7-inch Display Audio with electro-static touch-screen. Here you’ll find the available Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System, plus Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink for conveniently taking calls.
There’s more than navigation and phone access here though. You get great entertainment options like SiriusXM® Satellite Radio, Pandora®, Android Auto™, and Apple CarPlay™.
The 2018 Subaru Forester has a standard STARLINK™ 6.2-inch Multimedia screen on its dashboard. There’s also an option to upgrade to a 7-inch screen.
This system gives you navigation and Bluetooth® capabilities as well, but it doesn’t offer as many options for entertainment. Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ are not available.
