The Process of Replacing a Car Battery

What actually goes into replacing the battery when you bring your vehicle to our service center? It starts by detaching the negative battery cable from the battery itself. We pull up on the end of the cable, using a battery terminal puller if needed. Next, the positive battery cable is removed from the battery.

After both cables have been removed, the battery clamp is taken off. The next step is to take the battery out of the battery tray itself. Any corrosion that was left behind from the old battery will be cleaned up. The battery cable connectors will be checked too. There may be corrosion on these connectors, so a battery-cleaning solution will be used.

A new battery is placed into your vehicle and then secured using the hold-down clamp. The positive battery cable (red) will be attached and tightened, and then the negative battery cable (black) will be attached too. We’ll check that all connections are secured and send you on your way! It’s that easy to replace a vehicle’s battery.

Signs You Need a New Car Battery

For many, it’s common knowledge that a car battery is a 12-volt DC battery. However, your car’s battery voltage can keep you up to date about the condition of the battery itself. The ideal car battery voltage should be between 13.7 volts to 14.7 volts when the car is in use. If the engine is turned off, the reading should be right at 12.6 volts.

If the battery isn’t fully charged, it will be at 12.4 volts if it’s around 75% and 12 volts when down to 25% effectiveness. It dips slightly under 12 volts when discharged.

Test your car’s battery at home using a voltmeter. The positive cable of the voltmeter will touch the positive terminal of the battery, while the negative cable of the voltmeter touches the negative terminal of the battery. The reading will let you know if your car’s battery is in the right range or if it may need to be replaced.
